Rio spent years building and is now selling the case that it can run what it built. Its productivity target has nearly tripled in seven months, and copper and aluminium now carry most of the profit rather than iron ore. How much of the productivity target is cost cuts versus higher volumes?
Its cost programme became the growth story.
The productivity target has nearly tripled in seven months, to a $1.8 billion run rate by year end, with $870 million banked by June. Earnings now depend more on how well Rio runs its mines and less on metal prices it cannot control. Which parts of the business are contributing the most to the savings?
Copper and aluminium, not iron ore, now drive profit.
Nearly 60% of first-half earnings came from copper, aluminium and lithium, with copper profit up 84% as Oyu Tolgoi ramps up. Rio now rises and falls with electrification and data-centre demand, not Chinese steel.
Record spending still runs ahead of the payoff.
CapEx stays at up to $11 billion a year through 2027 while volumes grow only about 3%, held back by mine closures and falling grades. Kennecott's furnace breach and a Mongolian tax dispute push the cash further out. How much of the 2026 spending is Simandou rather than the Pilbara?
Bullish
The cost savings keep compounding past this year. Each dollar cut from running the mines goes straight to profit whatever prices do, so results depend less on the market.
Simandou and Oyu Tolgoi ramp up on schedule. Those tonnes arrive with the spending already done, so they add profit without adding new bills.
Copper and aluminium demand keeps growing. More than half the profit now comes from electrification and data centres, so weak Chinese construction matters less.
Bearish
The savings get harder as the programme matures. If costs stop falling, profit goes back to being set by metal prices Rio does not control.
Peak spending runs on while volumes barely grow. The bills land now and the extra tonnes arrive later, so the next few years look weaker than the business really is.
Site problems keep pushing metal into later years. Cash expected this year shows up next year, and the payments it was meant to fund have to wait.
