Analysis

Last 4 earnings calls · through Q1 FY2027

Deckers has shifted from raising guidance to defending margins: revenue growth slowed to about 6%, but direct sales and full-price selling carried the profit, and management's first three-year plan spends now for a payoff it says comes later. How much of the shift to DTC comes from HOKA versus UGG?

  • Growth slowed, and the back half now carries the year.

Deckers raised its full-year outlook twice last year, then guided the new year to high single digits. The first quarter came in near 6% and the next is guided close to 5%, a slow start management blames on shipment timing. Which regions make up the second-half wholesale acceleration?

  • Direct selling and full price are what the model runs on now.

HOKA's direct business grew 17% in the first quarter against 8% for the brand, and UGG's returned to growth once wholesalers were restocked. With inventory down 5% and discounts scarce, Deckers keeps more of each full-price sale.

  • Costs are rising twice as fast as sales, by design.

SG&A grew 13% in the first quarter while revenue rose under 6%, funding HOKA awareness and new stores. Management says that spending pays off as lower costs only the year after next, so the next few quarters buy growth, not prove it. How much of the added SG&A is marketing versus new HOKA stores?

Bullish
  • HOKA keeps growing low double digits as new doors open. More places to buy it means more full-price sales without Deckers paying for the shelf, so growth arrives cheap.
  • Full-price selling holds even as price increases stick. When nothing gets discounted, higher costs are paid by the customer instead of coming out of Deckers' profit.
  • The second-half wholesale orders ship on time. Those orders are already booked, so the year only works if they land in this fiscal year rather than slipping again.
Bearish
  • SG&A keeps growing twice as fast as revenue. Spending outruns the sales it is meant to create, so profit grows more slowly than the three-year plan promises.
  • Freight, materials and tariffs keep getting more expensive. Deckers refuses to discount to win volume back, so every extra dollar of cost lands directly on profit.
  • HOKA's second-half acceleration does not arrive. The growth the three-year plan leans on gets pushed into a later year, and the spending still has to be paid for now.
