Analysis

Last 4 earnings calls · through Q2 FY2026

Four straight quarters of applied bookings above 100% turned the commercial HVAC backlog into the whole story: 2026 guidance has been raised twice, now to about 9% organic growth, as residential and transport stop dragging. How much of that $12.1 billion backlog converts to revenue this year?

  • Applied orders have more than doubled for four quarters running.

Management points to long-term capacity agreements with data centre customers, and most orders ship within 15 months. With about $6 billion committed to 2027 and beyond, much of the next two years is sold before it begins. What share of that backlog sits under master purchase agreements?

  • The fastest revenue growth came with lower margins.

Revenue rose about 11% in Q2 FY2026 while gross margin fell two points. Tariffs and metals outran price, and capacity and Stellar spending hit the same quarter, leaving leverage below the 25% target management sets.

  • The two weak businesses turned at the same time.

Residential dragged last year after Trane cut a third of its production days to clear inventory; it is now guided to grow. Thermo King is still shrinking but beating its market, and management expects it to turn late this year. How much of the residential rebound this year is price versus volume?

Bullish
  • The record backlog converts on the schedule management gave. Most of next year's commercial HVAC sales are already sold, so revenue keeps growing even if new orders slow down.
  • Services keeps compounding at a low-teens pace behind the equipment. A third of revenue now comes from repeat service work that does not depend on new buildings being started.
  • Price and factory productivity keep covering tariffs and metals. Sales then turn into profit instead of being eaten by higher costs, which is the thing to watch each quarter.
Bearish
  • Price cannot keep up with tariffs and raw materials. Even a bigger order book earns less per sale, so revenue growth stops showing up as profit.
  • Capacity spending and the Stellar integration keep weighing on profit. Money goes out this year for plants and hiring that only pay back later, so reported profit trails sales.
  • Data centre orders land in lumps and delivery dates slip. A quarter or two can come in short even though no demand is lost, making growth look shakier than it is.
