Analysis

Last 4 earnings calls · through Q2 FY2026

SLB is adding three faster-growing businesses — production recovery, digital and data centres — on top of a core oilfield arm management says is entering an upcycle, if the Gulf recovery and a wave of offshore approvals both arrive. How much of the data centre revenue is already contracted?

  • Data centres became a real second growth engine.

It did not exist two years ago. It now sells to hyperscalers rather than oil companies, and management doubled its exit-2027 target to over $2 billion a year — revenue that no oil price can take away. How much of the data centre backlog is under contract?

  • ChampionX is doing what SLB bought it for.

ChampionX grew and expanded margins for a third straight quarter, and half of its $400 million of savings land by 2026. It earns money keeping wells producing, not drilling new ones, so it holds up better when customers cut spending.

  • The outlook still hinges on a region at war.

The conflict shut Gulf work down and management warns that 'returning to full activity will take time.' Middle East revenue is assumed to recover to 95% of last year's level, and a fresh escalation would cost about $150 million. Which Middle East countries are still offline?

Bullish
  • Production recovery demand
The bull case is that customers must get more barrels from existing fields, so spending on chemicals, artificial lift and intervention holds when drilling budgets are cut.
  • Data center capacity
Data center solutions give SLB a second growth line with backlog already secured, and management keeps raising the target as hyperscalers sign on as customers.
  • Digital recurring revenue
Digital subscriptions and digital operations produce recurring revenue tied to keeping wells producing, which grows faster than the core and carries higher margins.
Bearish
  • Middle East concentration
The bear case is that a large share of revenue comes from a few Middle East state oil companies, so conflict or slow remobilization can take out earnings fast.
  • Pricing pressure in tenders
International work is awarded through competitive tenders and pricing has been weak for two years, so higher activity does not automatically become higher margin.
  • Cyclical spending dependence
Revenue still depends on oil and gas investment, which has fallen sharply in past downturns and left SLB with idle equipment and lower margins.
