Last 4 earnings calls · through Q2 FY2026

Quanta keeps setting records — $53 billion of backlog and another raised year — but the work that defines the next decade, gas plants and the big 765kV lines, is still being negotiated rather than booked. The build is real; the timing is the whole story. When do the first large generation awards actually convert to backlog?

  • The record backlog is missing the biggest jobs.

Almost all of its gas generation work is still being negotiated and no big 765kV transmission line is booked. That work reaches the field from late 2027, so growth now comes from the everyday grid business, not the giant projects. Which segments are actually carrying the backlog growth right now?

  • Margins, not just revenue, are starting to move.

The underground and industrial segment improved and management, long cautious on this, now says those margins can reach the electric business. More of the work done by Quanta's own crews rather than subcontracted is what is lifting them.

  • People and factory costs are landing before the work.

Quanta added about 15,000 employees in a year, to over 85,000, and is building transformer and fabrication plants now. Those costs land years before the projects that need them, so near-term profit carries the weight. How much of the transformer and fabrication capex is already committed?

Bullish
  • Record backlog and demand
Demand from utilities, power producers and technology customers outruns what the industry can build, so Quanta's backlog grows faster than it can convert it.
  • Self-perform craft labor
Because Quanta self-performs most of its work with its own crews, it can promise schedules rivals cannot, which supports negotiated multiyear contracts instead of competitive bids.
  • Vertical supply chain investment
Investments in transformer, breaker and fabrication capacity shorten schedules, which management says makes Quanta harder to replace on large utility and data center programs.
Bearish
  • Utility spending sets the ceiling
Most of Quanta's revenue is regulated utility spending, where commissions set allowed returns, so volume can grow for years without margins improving much.
  • Large projects convert slowly
Much of the growth Quanta sells sits in transmission and generation awards that reach the field years from now, so near-term results depend on routine maintenance work.
  • Data center permitting limits
State and local limits on data centers, along with crowded interconnection queues, can delay or shrink the technology projects that drive the fastest part of the backlog.
