Analysis

Last 4 earnings calls · through Q3 FY2026

Hasbro is no longer a toy company that happens to own a card game. Magic now supplies close to half of revenue and most of the profit, and the whole story hangs on whether that flywheel keeps spinning at a much bigger base. How much of Hasbro's Magic growth now comes from backlist?

  • Magic quietly became the company's profit engine.

Wizards' revenue roughly doubled across these four calls while toys went from shrinking to slow growth. In Q3 that unit earned a 49% operating margin against 21% for toys, so most of what Hasbro earns now rides on one brand. What share of Hasbro's operating profit now comes from Wizards?

  • Guidance went up twice, and Q4 Magic still comes in lower.

The full-year outlook was raised in July and again in October, yet Magic is still expected to fall in Q4: about $40 million of shipments landed early and the next set slips into January. Timing, not demand, sets the quarter.

  • The next leg of growth is paid for before it earns.

Hasbro wrote off $56 million on canceled games and expects Wizards' margin to drop to the high 30s next year as 2027 title costs land. The toy unit's margin jump also leaned on tariff refunds that do not repeat. How much of Hasbro's toy margin gain was one-time tariff money?

Bullish
  • Magic franchise durability
The bull case is that Magic now has a growing player base, more stores carrying it and high retention, so its revenue is a durable franchise rather than a one-year release hit.
  • Outlook raised twice
Management has raised its full-year outlook twice in a row and beaten estimates every quarter, which supporters read as delivery on the plan rather than promises.
  • New toy licenses
New licenses such as Harry Potter and Zelda plus a strong partner film slate give the toy business a route back to growth after several declining years.
Bearish
  • Magic growth decelerating
The bear case says Magic cannot keep growing off record results, and management's own plan assumes the franchise slowing to single digits next year.
  • Video game execution risk
Two self-published games launch next year carrying large development and marketing costs, and their amortization hits reported profit whether or not they sell.
  • Toys grow slowly
Consumer Products is guided to low single-digit growth with thin margins that depend on tariffs, oil-linked input costs and retailer ordering staying favorable.
