Analysis

Last 4 earnings calls · through Q2 FY2026

Fiserv has cut its outlook twice and changed chief executive, and the second cut was about its own execution, not just Argentina. Management still holds its 2027 targets and points to recurring revenue and cash as proof the business is sound. How much of the 2027 growth target rests on deals already signed?

  • The reset slipped a second time, and this cut was self-inflicted.

Six months after February's plan, August took 2026 organic revenue to flat and margin to about 31%, blaming slower client rollouts, a weak Argentina and more tech spending. The costs land now; the sales they buy arrive later. How much of the delayed 2026 revenue is contracted for 2027?

  • Argentina went from growth engine to drag on profit.

Argentina's lending business once added about ten points of growth at double the usual margin. Falling inflation and rates there now drag on revenue and profit at once, which is why the underlying business looks so much slower.

  • Clover is the growth that is left, and its target came down too.

Clover adds merchants and earns a quarter of its revenue from software and lending, but the 2026 revenue forecast was cut to mid-single digits. Management kept the medium-term 15% to 20% Clover target, so the recovery rests on that promise. What has to be true for Clover to reach 15% to 20%?

Bullish
  • Recurring revenue base
The bull case is that most revenue recurs with payment volumes and accounts Fiserv already serves, so the decline reflects lost one-time revenue rather than lost customers.
  • Modern core and Commerce Hub
Newer platforms such as Finxact and Commerce Hub are winning large clients and adding accounts quickly, giving growth even where legacy banking products stall.
  • Clover distribution partners
Clover reaches merchants through bank, software and international partners, which management says can keep small business growth ahead of the market without converting existing merchants.
Bearish
  • Repeated outlook cuts
The bear case is that Fiserv has cut its outlook twice in a year and each cut was described as timing that would be recovered later, so the current numbers may not be a floor.
  • Core banking attrition
Rival core systems and years of weak client service have cost Fiserv bank and credit union accounts, and revenue from those clients shrinks faster than new signings replace it.
  • Fixed cost base
Profit is falling because revenue declines against a largely fixed cost base while management adds spending on technology and security, so earnings depend on revenue returning.
