Last 4 earnings calls · through Q4 FY2026

FedEx spent FY2026 proving it could raise prices and win premium freight at the same time, then split off Freight to leave a smaller, faster-growing company. Calendar 2026 now turns on whether that pricing power keeps outrunning a much bigger cost base. Which parts of FDX drove the $940M jump in Express operating income?

  • Express turned volume growth into profit, and kept doing it.

FedEx Express expanded its margin in every quarter of FY2026 on premium B2B volume and pricing rather than cost cuts alone. Management now treats the stronger Q3 peak as "a new standard", not a one-off. How does FDX's Express margin compare with its pre-pandemic peak?

  • The cost base is now the thing that decides the year.

The CY2026 plan pairs its pricing gain against $2.6 billion of higher wages and transport costs, plus $800 million of restored bonus pay and a new pilot contract. Price rises have to keep landing at that rate just to stand still.

  • The weak part of FedEx is now a separate company.

Freight was the only unit that shrank every quarter while Express grew, and it left the reported numbers on June 1. What stayed behind is a quarter-billion dollars of shared costs that management plans to work out over the next two years. How much of FDX's remaining shared cost can come out in CY2027?

Bullish
  • Network 2.0 keeps converting stations on the schedule management set. Fewer buildings and fewer trucks move the same parcels, so profit per package rises even when volume does not.
  • Premium health care and data-centre freight keep filling the network. Those shipments pay far more per pound than ordinary parcels, so FedEx earns more from the same aircraft and vans.
  • Pricing keeps landing at the rate FedEx has planned. Rising prices rather than extra volume do the work, so profit grows without FedEx having to buy more capacity.
Bearish
  • Network 2.0 savings slip past the 2027 target. The savings pay for the transformation itself, so a delay leaves FedEx running the old network and the new one at once.
  • Deliberately dropped parcel volume leaves gaps. FedEx is shedding cheap parcels on purpose; if premium shippers do not fill the space, planes and vans run half empty.
  • Price increases slow while wages and transport keep climbing. If price rises ease while costs do not, the gap producing this year's profit growth closes and margins stop improving.
