Crown Castle has finished turning itself into a US-only tower company and is absorbing the loss of DISH, the customer that supplied much of its reported growth. Management calls 2026 the low point for leasing; the story now rests on that being true. What has to happen for leasing growth to beat the 2026 low?
Crown Castle is now a pure-play US tower company.
The small cell and fiber sale closed on May 1, taking quarterly revenue to about $1 billion from $1.6 billion. What is left is one business whose only lever is running towers better than its two big rivals do. How does the tower-only margin compare with those two peers?
DISH turned from a customer into a $3.5 billion court claim.
DISH stopped paying, so Crown terminated the contract and is now chasing the money in bankruptcy court. A $2.4 billion escrow only funds if AT&T's spectrum purchase closes, and management says a ruling is a year away. Where does Crown rank among the claimants on that escrow?
Cost cuts, not leasing, are carrying 2026.
Rental billings fall this year once DISH and Sprint are gone, yet cash flow is guided slightly higher on lower interest and the $65 million of cost cuts. Those do not repeat, so leasing has to carry growth after this year.
Bullish
Nearly all of this year's growth is already signed. Most of the money is signed before the year starts, so a slowdown in carrier spending hits next year, not this one.
Carriers switch on the spectrum they just bought. New radios on towers Crown already owns lift the rent per site without the company building anything new.
The $65 million of cost savings holds, and land buys grow. Cheaper ground rent and lower overhead mean more of every rental dollar reaches shareholders.
Bearish
Carriers activate the new spectrum with software alone. If no equipment goes on the towers, Crown earns nothing from that spectrum and leasing growth stays flat.
Carriers keep cutting their own network spending. Crown loses leasing work and services work at the same time, the way services revenue already fell this year.
The DISH claim settles years later, for far less. That rent has to be replaced by the tower business itself, and the replacement has not arrived yet.
