Analysis

Last 4 earnings calls · through Q2 FY2026

Axon's constraint is no longer demand. Contracted bookings keep running ahead of the revenue line, and the money being spent to supply it now lands before the sales do. How much of Axon's $15.1 billion backlog converts to revenue within two years?

  • Demand has outrun the revenue line, and the backlog keeps growing.

Contracted future bookings reached $15.1 billion against roughly $3 billion of annual revenue. Management now also reports bookings adjusted for contract length, and still expects them to close the year near 30%.

  • Counter-drone went from a small acquisition to a core product line.

Dedrone passed $100 million of revenue in a quarter and bookings grew fivefold, opening federal and international doors Axon barely served before. It ships as hardware, so it earns less per dollar than software does. How much of Axon's counter-drone revenue returns as software over time?

  • Growth is now being paid for with cash the business has not collected.

Inventory is up by half since late 2025, to $487 million, as Axon stockpiles chips ahead of memory-price rises. Free cash flow has been flat to negative since, and most of the year's $450 million target must land in the fourth quarter. What happens to Axon's free cash flow if the fourth-quarter order surge slips?

Bullish
  • Counter-drone scale-up
Counter-drone and the other new products have grown from small acquisitions into categories big enough to change the growth rate on their own.
  • Contracted backlog visibility
Management argues demand is broad across products and markets, so the contracted backlog keeps revenue rising even when individual deals slip between quarters.
  • Premium software plan adoption
Most customers still buy entry-level software plans, so the bull case rests on moving them to premium plans with more products and higher revenue per user.
Bearish
  • Lumpy large-deal bookings
The bear case says growth now rests on a handful of very large government contracts, so a quarter's results depend on when a few slow negotiations close.
  • Cash tied up in inventory
Cash conversion is the sharper worry: inventory and component buying absorb profit, so earnings are not yet turning into free cash at the rate the business once produced.
  • Hardware-heavy revenue mix
Much of the newest growth is hardware, which carries lower margins, so faster revenue does not automatically mean faster growth in operating profit.
