Analysis

Last 4 earnings calls · through Q2 FY2026

Align is trading today's scanner revenue and clean reported profit for a bigger installed base and better margins, while record clear aligner volumes and growth outside the U.S. carry the company. Whether that trade pays off is the whole story. How fast is the installed scanner base converting into aligner cases?

  • Clear aligners are now doing all the heavy lifting.

Q2 FY2026 clear aligner revenue grew 8.2% while scanner revenue fell 11%, and volumes set another record. Growth is double-digit in EMEA, APAC and Latin America, and DSO partners, about a quarter of volume, keep growing. How much of the volume growth still comes from North America retail?

  • The scanner business is shrinking faster than management planned.

Management cut full-year Systems and Services revenue guidance to down 6% to 8%, from a flat outlook, as doctors pick cheaper scanners and rent instead of buy. It calls the shift intentional, trading money today for more doctors scanning.

  • Gross margin is improving even as reported profit looks worse.

Non-GAAP operating margin hit 22.9% in Q2 FY2026, above guidance, helped by cheaper lower-refinement plans that need less manufacturing. But GAAP margin guidance fell to about 15% on one-time charges, so reported profit looks worse. How much of the 2026 margin guidance cut is one-time charges?

Bullish
  • International aligner demand keeps growing double digits. Growth now sits outside the United States, so the business no longer depends on a cautious American consumer.
  • Cheaper, simpler treatment plans keep winning with doctors. They cost less to make, so each case earns more at a lower price, and profit improves without Align charging more.
  • Scanner placements with new doctors keep setting records. Each new scanning practice is a future source of aligner cases, so the scanner money given up today can come back.
Bearish
  • North America retail doctors are still not growing. It is Align's largest market and still a drag, so growth rests on places the company does not control.
  • The aligner cases may never follow the cheap scanners. If doctors scan patients but never treat them, Align has sold its hardware cheaply and rented it out for nothing.
  • One-time charges keep dragging reported profit down. A UK tax bill and restructuring costs pull reported profit down, so the improving business is harder to see.
