Analysis

Last 4 earnings calls · through Q2 FY2026

Vistra is turning itself from a company paid whatever the power market offers into one that has sold most of its nuclear output for 20 years, just as the spot market it still earns from in Texas cools. The bills for that switch land now; the contracts pay from 2027 on. How much of the 2027 nuclear output is still unsold?

  • Vistra has sold most of its nuclear output to two technology giants.

The Amazon and Meta deals cover 3.8 gigawatts for 20 years and, at full ramp, add nearly a quarter more cash per share. That money no longer rides on daily power prices, which is the point of the shift. What premium do the Amazon and Meta contracts pay over market power prices?

  • The spot market that still pays much of the bills is cooling.

The newest call put 2027 at the low end of its range, because Texas power prices fell sharply since the range was set. Stronger eastern prices and hedges cover only part of the gap, so less is locked in than a year ago.

  • The spending is landing years before the revenue it is meant to earn.

Vistra is putting $4.5 billion to $5 billion into Cogentrix, new gas units and nuclear upgrades, plus up to $1 billion into Helix. Amazon's site energizes at the end of 2027, so cash leaves years before the contracts return it. How much of the Helix commitment is firm, and when is it due?

Bullish
  • Nuclear contracts lock in revenue
The bull case is that long-term hyperscaler contracts turn merchant nuclear plants into decades of predictable revenue and lower the risk carried by the rest of the business.
  • Buying gas plants below cost
The bull case is that Vistra can keep buying modern gas plants for less than it would cost to build them, adding capacity and cash per share faster than rivals that only build.
  • Retail book steadies wholesale swings
The bull case also relies on retail, which sells power to millions of households and businesses and steadies results when wholesale prices or weather move against generation.
Bearish
  • Texas power prices stay soft
The bear case is that Texas power prices reflect a grid with spare capacity, so the largest generation market earns thin returns until new load actually connects.
  • Demand forecasts keep shrinking
Bears note that management keeps lowering its view of how fast demand arrives, which pushes the earnings benefit of data centers further into the future.
  • Interconnection rules unsettled
The bear case also rests on regulation, since PJM and Texas are still writing the rules on how data centers connect and who pays for the wires.
