Analysis

Last 4 earnings calls · through Q2 FY2026

Target's own changes, not the economy, put it back into growth: shoppers are coming more often and management has raised its outlook twice. The question is whether profit follows, because the two most profitable categories still are not selling. How much of the Q2 profit gain holds up without the tariff refund?

  • Growth is back, and it is coming from more shoppers.

Comp sales fell in Q3 FY2025 and rose 3.8% by Q2 FY2026 on traffic alone, and management raised the sales outlook twice. Growth from more trips rather than discounts is the healthier kind, because it does not come out of profit. How does Target's sales growth compare with Walmart and Costco?

  • The categories Target rebuilt are the ones growing.

Snacks are running more than 15% ahead of last year after a grocery reset, and beauty, baby and Fun101 all grew. Those are exactly the categories Target chose to rework, so the rest of the store has a tested playbook rather than a hope. What share of the store still has not been reworked?

  • The profit jump is cleaner on paper than in the business.

Tariff refunds added $1.65 a share in Q2 FY2026 and management says most of that is booked, while home and apparel, the categories that earn the most, were flat. The improvement underneath is real but smaller than the headline.

Bullish
  • Merchandising overhaul gaining traction
The bull case is that the assortment changes are pulling in more shoppers, so growth now depends on how fast Target executes rather than on whether demand exists.
  • Guidance raised twice
Management has raised its full-year outlook twice this year, which bulls read as a sign the turnaround is running ahead of plan rather than merely in line with it.
  • Owned brands and retail media
Owned brands and the advertising and marketplace businesses carry higher margins than national brands, so a modest sales recovery can lift profit faster than revenue.
Bearish
  • Home and apparel still weak
The bear case is that the two categories tied most closely to discretionary spending and to Target's design reputation have not recovered, and their long lead times slow any fix.
  • One-time tariff refunds
A large one-time tariff refund sits inside reported profit, so the underlying earnings base is smaller than the headline results suggest and may not carry into next year.
  • Permanent investment spending
Management calls the added operating spending permanent and is lifting capital outlays on stores, so costs rise even if the sales recovery stalls.
