Analysis

Last 4 earnings calls · through Q2 FY2026

Demand flipped from a glut to sold out inside two quarters, but the profit arrives late: costs hit the books immediately, while the price rises that pay for them only reach the box business next year. How much of the 2027 recovery comes from price versus cost takeout?

  • Paper demand flipped from a glut to sold out in two quarters.

A year ago markets were drowning in paper capacity. By Q2 FY2026 Tony Smurfit called them "as strong as I have seen in my lifetime", with mills sold out and no commercial downtime expected for the rest of 2026. Which paper grades are still short of sold out, and why?

  • Costs arrive first; the prices that pay for them arrive a year later.

Freight inflation grew from a modest headwind in April to management's biggest cost problem by July, and full-year profit guidance came down again. The new containerboard price rises are deliberately left out of 2026. What happens to 2027 margins if freight stays this high?

  • The 2030 plan rests on fixing North America, not on pricing.

North American box plants run near break-even against a target of low-double-digit margins, and loss-making plants have fallen from about 80 to roughly 20. Management is betting its own people close the gap, not the market.

Bullish
  • The mills stay sold out and the announced price rises stick. Price rises cost almost nothing to deliver, so they land as profit instead of being eaten up by more spending.
  • Freight and energy costs stop climbing. The gap between what it pays and what it charges stops widening, so profits recover without new price rises.
  • North American box plants keep climbing toward the 8% to 12% target. This is the lever management controls, and it decides whether the 2030 goal needs help from the market.
Bearish
  • Freight and energy stay this high for another year. Costs keep landing before the prices that pay for them, so a sold-out market still delivers barely higher profit.
  • Corrugated box volumes stay negative. Boxes are what turn paper into profit, and every lost customer has to be won back one plant and one contract at a time.
  • The North American box turnaround stalls near break-even. Most of the 2030 profit growth is meant to come from there, so the company's own plan would rest on the wrong number.
