Analysis

Last 4 earnings calls · through Q2 FY2026

FIS has become a pure bank-technology company: it sold Worldpay, bought TSYS, and Banking now carries three-quarters of revenue and nearly all the growth. The question is whether cash flow, guided to $3 billion by 2028, can carry it while Capital Markets is repaired. How much of the 2028 cash goal depends on Capital Markets improving?

  • Banking is now the whole company, and it is beating its own targets.

Banking grew 6.1% in Q2 FY2026, above the top of its guidance, and management reiterated the full-year banking outlook even as the company total was cut. TSYS now lets FIS sell core, debit and credit to the same large banks.

  • Cash flow, not revenue, is what management is actually changing.

Free cash flow more than tripled in Q2 FY2026 and the full-year target was raised again, toward $3 billion by 2028. The driver is falling one-time integration costs, not faster sales, so cash improves even if growth stays modest.

  • Capital Markets was rebased and is now the drag on the whole company.

Management cut the segment's full-year growth outlook roughly in half, blamed its own execution and is reviewing which products still belong. Capital Markets is a quarter of revenue and the reason FIS is not growing faster. How much of the Capital Markets miss was lending versus execution?

Bullish
  • Banking and payments demand
Demand from large banks for payments, digital and lending is strong, so FIS can keep growing its biggest segment faster than the market it serves.
  • Credit issuing cross-sell
Owning the credit card processor gives FIS data and clients it can sell more products into, and joint-client sales are growing faster than either business alone.
  • Cash flow ahead of earnings
Cash generation is growing faster than profit as one-time integration and restructuring costs fall, which pays down debt and later funds shareholder returns.
Bearish
  • Capital Markets execution
The Capital Markets segment keeps missing its own sales and delivery targets, so guidance has been cut and confidence in management's forecasts is weaker.
  • Debt from Total Issuing
FIS borrowed heavily to buy the credit card processor, so net debt has nearly doubled and share repurchases are paused until leverage comes down.
  • One-time license revenue
Banking growth has been helped by large one-time license and term fees that management says are returning to normal, which sets up harder comparisons next year.
