Analysis

Last 4 earnings calls · through Q2 FY2026

Expedia has turned cost discipline into a repeatable margin story and built B2B into a second growth engine, but room-night growth has halved and the second half gets harder as last year's savings are used up. How much of last year's cost savings carries into 2027?

  • Margin expansion became the reliable part of the story.

Consumer marketing spend fell 7% while consumer bookings grew at their fastest pace in years, and management says it did not leave growth on the table. AI is doing part of that work, and running it is getting more expensive. How much of the consumer marketing savings is permanent?

  • B2B is now a second engine, not a side business.

Twenty straight quarters of double-digit growth, led by Rapid API, with partners like Uber and Bank of Montreal added this year. It now grows about twice as fast as the consumer brands, so it sets the pace for the whole company.

  • Room nights are growing at half the pace they were a year ago.

Booked room nights slowed from 11% growth to 6% across the calls, with higher prices rather than more travellers holding the top line up. A Middle East conflict and Mexico advisories took roughly 2 points off one quarter in weeks. How much of the bookings growth is price rather than more nights?

Bullish
  • Consumer brand repositioning
The bull case is that Expedia has finished repositioning its three consumer brands, so Hotels.com and Vrbo now grow alongside the flagship instead of dragging on it.
  • Partner distribution growth
The partner business has compounded double-digit growth for years by adding partners and products, giving Expedia a second demand channel apart from its own brand traffic.
  • Marketing spend efficiency
Better measurement and reallocation of marketing money let the company grow bookings while spending less, and management argues those gains are structural rather than temporary.
Bearish
  • Decelerating bookings growth
The bear case is that growth slows sharply as last year's acceleration enters the comparison, and management's own guidance assumes second-half deceleration.
  • Margin gains from cost cuts
A large part of the margin improvement came from cutting marketing and overhead, a one-time step that cannot repeat once those savings sit in the comparison base.
  • Partner product investment
Growth in the partner business is being bought partly with investment in new product lines and acquisitions, so the segment driving growth is also where margins are given up.
