Last 4 earnings calls · through Q2 FY2026

Devon spent a year proving it could take $1 billion of cost out of its own business, then merged with Coterra and pointed the same playbook at a second $1 billion. The next test is the portfolio review management says is measured in months. How much of the synergy target lands in 2027 cash flow?

  • The self-help program became the company's operating system.

Devon captured 85% of the $1 billion target inside a year, ahead of schedule. Management calls it "no longer a program with an end date", and the same machine now runs the Coterra synergies. It sells a repeatable way of finding cash. Which merger initiatives are already showing up in free cash flow?

  • The merger closed fast and beat both stand-alone plans.

It closed 94 days after announcement. Combined guidance then came in better than either stand-alone plan, and only 43% of cash flow goes back into drilling, down from the mid-50s — so more of what Devon earns stays with its owners.

  • The portfolio review is the open question management hasn't answered.

Every asset must now "earn its seat at the table", but nothing has been decided and executives admit investors are waiting for a clear direction. Spending is guided to its highest quarter of the year, on a portfolio it may not keep. Which assets are most likely to be sold in the portfolio review?

Bullish
  • Delaware inventory depth
The bull case is that the merger leaves Devon with one of the deepest low-cost inventories in the Delaware Basin, so the drilling program keeps running without hunting for new acreage.
  • Merger cost synergies
Combining two operators that already work the same basins is expected to cut well costs and overhead, and management treats those savings as repeatable rather than one-time.
  • Autonomous artificial lift
Technology is the second leg: closed-loop artificial lift and recovery chemistry are meant to hold production up while requiring fewer maintenance wells and less capital.
Bearish
  • Commodity price exposure
Oil and gas prices the company does not control set revenue, and the prior downturn showed margins can go from solidly positive to deeply negative within a few years.
  • Unresolved asset sales
An open portfolio review means nobody yet knows which basins Devon keeps, so the cost structure and cash flow of the go-forward company are still undecided.
  • Permian gas basis
A slice of the gas is sold into a local Permian market that has printed negative prices, and hedges only protect part of that volume for a limited time.
