Analysis

Last 4 earnings calls · through Q3 FY2026

Demand now outruns what Ciena can build. Backlog has gone from $5 billion to a projected $10 billion-plus in a year, guidance has been raised three quarters running, and record margins are following. The whole story now turns on how fast it can convert. How much of the $10 billion backlog can it actually ship in 2027?

  • Demand is now bigger than Ciena's ability to supply it.

Management said Q1 revenue would have been higher but for supply, and that the gap lasts several more quarters. Capacity is being locked in through 2029, so growth is capped by what Ciena can build, not by what customers want. How much extra capacity came online in 2026 versus 2025?

  • Gross margin has reset far higher, and the old target is now a waypoint.

Adjusted gross margin rose from 42.7% for FY2025 to 46.4% in Q3 FY2026 on cost cuts, mix and price rises on new orders. Management now calls that level a baseline, not the destination.

  • Ciena's growth now rests on a handful of hyperscalers.

Two cloud providers each supplied more than 10% of Q2 revenue, and roughly half the business is now hyperscale. When a handful of buyers set the pace, the backlog is only as firm as their plans. How much of revenue comes from the top three customers?

Bullish
  • AI network spending accelerates
The bull case is that hyperscalers underinvested in the optical network for years and must now connect data centers faster than Ciena can add capacity.
  • Backlog covers coming years
Orders already booked cover most of next year's plan and extend into later years, so growth depends on what Ciena can build rather than on winning new business.
  • Line system incumbency
Ciena's line systems are the standard cloud providers build on, and co-developed products for data center links extend that position into new applications.
Bearish
  • Customer concentration
The bear case is that a handful of hyperscalers drive the order book, so a pause in one customer's network spending would be felt across the whole business.
  • Supply limits revenue
Component shortages decide how much Ciena ships, and management says demand will keep outrunning supply, leaving growth partly outside the company's control.
  • Cost inflation
Rising input costs and early production of new products hold margins back, and price increases must be balanced against keeping hard-won market share.
